I suck at singing songs is a comment that many people make. However, remember that we all are our own worst critics and even if you perceive that you are a lousy singer it is reassuring to know that you can sing with confidence when you follow a few basic steps. This article will provide you with some valuable information on how to improve your singing voice so that you no longer need to say, I suck at singing.
The Basics- Good Posture
The first thing to master is having good posture. To sing correctly and beautifully, you will need to make sure that you have good posture. You can sing either sitting or standing but make sure that either way you have your back straight. Do not tilt your body to one side or to the other. Check to see that your head is not tilted forwards or backwards.
The Basics- Breathing
It is imperative that you learn how to breathe from your diaphragm. One of the most important things when you sing is to have correct breathing. As you breathe, make certain that you are not taking air from your chest but rather from your diaphragm. You will know when you are doing it correctly because your abdomen will expand rather than your chest. As you sing, push downward on your diaphragm as you ascend the scale. When you descend the scale release your diaphragm.
To support your voice with your diaphragm is one of the main keys to singing. You can practice by putting your hand on your stomach and at the same time inhaling through your nose. If you are doing it properly your abdomen will expand outwards as you breathe in. Make sure that your chest does not move up or out. When you exhale, contract and push down on the abdominal muscles. It is a similar feeling to doing a sit up. Keep doing this exercise until it is natural when you sing.
The Basics- Vowels
One of the fastest ways to improve your singing is by opening your vowels. This technique is often called the open throat technique. You achieve it by repeating the vowels A-E-I-O-U. As you say these vowels try not to close your jaw. If you find it hard to keep your jaw down then simply use your fingers and pull it down. Continue with this exercise until you are able to say all of the vowels with your mouth completely open.
Follow this exercise by singing the vowels. Remember to keep your jaw open as you sing in the exact same way that you did when you were saying them. Follow this by saying a phrase and opening the jaw as you sing out each vowel. Like most things in life that you want to be successful at, it will take some time and practice. However, by continuing to practice this vowel singing exercise you will definitely improve your singing quality and your voice will start to naturally grow.
